Canadian romantic comedy HEARTBEATS chronicles unusual menage a trois! The 2010 French-Canadian film HEARTBEATS is the second feature from 22-year-old Montreal wunderkind Xavier Dolan. (His wildly acclaimed first film, I KILLED MY MOTHER, is tied up in litigation and thus has never been released in the U.S.) HEARTBEATS is a sexy romantic comedy about two close friends-a gay man (Dolan) and a beautiful young woman-who compete for the affections of a hot new Adonis in town. With its youthful cast and daring filmmaking, the movie echoes works by Bertolucci, Truffaut, and other international "New Wavers." Entertainment Weekly gave it an "A-," calling it "(a) madly stylish Montreal-made delight, happily under the influence of Godard, Audrey Hepburn, and Wong Kar-wai." Here's the trailer. Catch it Friday or Saturday. Print this post and present it at the box office and see HEARTBEATS for only $6 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out) Oberlin grad Lena Dunham returns to the Cinematheque -- this time on screen in her hit comedy TINY FURNITURE According to an interview she did on WCPN earlier this year, Lena Dunham, director and star of the hit indie comedy TINY FURNITURE , attended movies at the Cinematheque when she was a student at Oberlin College. Now we return the favor by screening her acclaimed feature on Friday and Saturday. TINY FURNITURE tells the (apparently semi-autobiographical) tale of a young woman (Dunham) with a film degree from a liberal arts college in the Midwest who returns to her New York City home to find direction in her life. Her artist mother and a brilliant younger sister -- and two would-be boyfriends -- help/hinder her quest. Chaplin and Keaton perform together for the first and only time in LIMELIGHT We conclude our three-month Charlie Chaplin retrospective with the director's LIMELIGHT (1952), his moving and magnificent valedictory to show business. As Calvero, an aging, alcoholic, once-great British music hall entertainer now facing an ignominious end, Chaplin looks back on his career as a physical comedian (as well as his hardscrabble youth in London). Calvero rediscovers hope when he saves a depressed young ballet dancer (Claire Bloom) from suicide and nurses her back to health. He tells her that life is worth living, and even tries to believe it himself. This sentimental film with Oscar-winning music also has a lot of laughs-many of them coming in a scene in which Chaplin and Buster Keaton perform together on screen for the first and only time. See it in a new 35mm print on Friday or Saturday. Kids 12 & under will be admitted for only $6.
