5/19-24: Restored Taxi Driver, White Material & More!

05/17/11  |  Posted by Cinematheque  |  Posted in Cinematheque

Scorsese's TAXI DRIVER returns in gorgeously seedy new digital restoration! Martin Scorsese's 1976 masterpiece TAXI DRIVER stars Robert De Niro as Travis Bickle, an alienated, unhinged NYC cab driver and ticking time bomb who spends his nights driving around a city whose filth, ugliness, and depravity he loathes. This indelible vision of urban hell co-stars Jodie Foster, Harvey Keitel, Albert Brooks, and Cybill Shepherd. It was written by Paul Schrader and features Bernard Herrmann's final musical score. And now it's been fully restored for its 35th anniversary! Adults shouldn't fail to hail this cab on Friday or Saturday. Cinematheque returns to the Capitol Theatre with two new docs: ORGASM INC. and AMERICAN GRINDHOUSE On Thursday night the Cinematheque returns to the Capitol Theatre at 1390 W. 65th St (at Detroit Ave.) to show two new documentaries. Elizabeth Canner's shocking and hilarious ORGASM INC. follows the filmmaker as she takes a job inside a pharmaceutical company. There she manages to document, Michael Moore-style, the race to develop a Viagra drug for women. Canner cannily shows that this would-be pill is as suspect as the concocted condition it is supposed to cure: FSD (Female Sexual Dysfunction), which affects 43% (!) of women, according to Big Pharma. Adults only can see it Thursday at 7 pm. Here's the trailer. Elijah Drenner's AMERICAN GRINDHOUSE , showing at the Capitol at 8:40 pm on Thursday (for a separate admission), traces the history of exploitation films from the nineteen-teens to today. Filled with tantalizing film clips from sex education films, nudie-cuties, roughies, biker flicks, blaxploitation, and women-in-prison dramas, AMERICAN GRINDHOUSE also features interviews with John Landis, Joe Dante, Herschell Gordon Lewis, Fred Williamson, and others. Here's a preview. But you must be 18 to see the whole movie! Admission to either of these films at the Capitol is $9; Cinematheque members and CIA students & staff $6. Non-members can see both movies for only $15. Advance tickets are available at www.clevelandcinemas.com. No Cleveland Cinemas passes or discounts will be honored. Free parking is available next to the theatre and at other lots in the Gordon Square Arts District. Special thanks to Jon Forman and Dave Huffman, Cleveland Cinemas. isabelle Huppert ignores the writing on the wall in Claire Denis' WHITE MATERIAL WHITE MATERIAL , the acclaimed new movie by France's great filmmaker Claire Denis (35 SHOTS OF RUM, BEAU TRAVAIL), stars Isabelle Huppert as a fearless, foolish white coffee plantation owner in Africa who ignores imminent dangers when civil war breaks out in her unnamed country. Christopher Lambert and Isaach De Bankolé co-star in this gripping and gracefully filmed foreign-language movie that Artforum proclaimed "the best film of the year." Britain's estimable movie magazine Sight & Sound had this to say about Claire Denis: "There is no better filmmaker working in the world right now." Don't miss this must-see movie in a 35mm color & scope print on Friday or Saturday. MONSIEUR VERDOUX is Chaplin's blackest comedy -- and one of his best Charles Chaplin's 1947 MONSIEUR VERDOUX is a "comedy of murders" based on an idea by Orson Welles. Chaplin plays a dapper Parisian bank clerk who kills rich widows for their money -- but he has another motive as well. This celebrated but controversial classic, another masterpiece, marked a startling change of pace for the great clown. Martha Raye is the funniest of his would-be victims. Make Verdoux's acquaintance on Friday or Saturday. We promise you'll get out alive. LATE ADDITION TO OUR MAY SCHEDULE! Cleveland-born San Francisco filmmaker Chuck Hudina to appear in person on 5/24 Chuck Hudina is an acclaimed San Francisco filmmaker, photographer, and visual artist who was born in Cleveland and graduated from Collinwood High School. On Tuesday night May 24 at 6:45 pm he appears in person to present a program of his short 16mm documentaries and experimental movies. Hudina's award-winning films have been exhibited at The Museum of Modern Art, the Pacific Film Archive, and at the Ann Arbor, Black Maria, and Athens International Film Festivals, among many other venues. But this will be the first time a program of his work will show in his hometown. The centerpiece of THE FILMS OF CHUCK HUDINA is "Grease" (1974, pictured above), a 47-min. fiction/documentary hybrid about 1950s-style "greasers." The movie has been likened to John Cassavetes' SHADOWS. Also screening in the program are: "Ikarus" (1973), a slow-motion dive shot at 3,000 pictures per second; "Parents' Visit" (1974), an autobiographical documentary; "Bicycle" (1975), a spoke's-eye view of a bike ride; and "On the Corner" (1980), an urban ballet performed by street children. "Nigeria" (1989), previously announced in press releases and on a flyer promoting the event, will not be shown. This program is for adults only. Print this post and present it at the box office on Tuesday, May 24 and see THE FILMS OF CHUCK HUDINA for only $6 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque members). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out. Read more about Chuck Hudina here http://www.chuckhudina.com.
