Julie ("Lion King," "Spider-Man") Taymor directs Shakespeare's THE TEMPEST Helen Mirren, Chris Cooper, Russell Brand, Alfred Molina, Djimon Hounsou, David Strathairn, Allan Cumming, and Tom Conti star in THE TEMPEST, the new film by Oberlin grad Julie Taymor (FRIDA, ACROSS THE UNIVERSE, Broadway's THE LION KING and SPIDER-MAN: TURN OFF THE DARK). It's an imaginative, often brilliant new version of Shakespeare's final play in which Prospero, the story's main character, an exiled wizard, is now a woman, Prospera (Mirren). This adds a new dimension to the relationship with daughter Miranda. But Prospera remains a magical puppetmaster who lords over an island, pulling the strings of the comic shipwreck survivors who stumble upon it. This 2010 New York Film Festival selection blows into town Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Watch the trailer and we think you'll be intrigued. THE CIRCUS opens three months of comedies by the immortal Charlie Chaplin Made between THE GOLD RUSH and CITY LIGHTS, THE CIRCUS (1928) is the least-known of Charlie Chaplin's silent comedy features. In the film, the Little Tramp joins a circus, falls in love with a bareback rider, and, in one memorable scene (pictured above), battles monkeys on a high-wire. It will be preceded by Chaplin's 1922 short "Pay Day." This is the first of seven programs of Chaplin silents that we will present in March and April. (Five Chaplin sound features will continue the retrospective in May and June.) THE CIRCUS comes to town in a new 35mm print with a music track on Saturday and Sunday; kids 12 & under can see it for only $6. Scary, twisted comedy thriller RARE EXPORTS marks the 13th day of Christmas Why show a Christmas film in March? Well, Jalmari Helander's 2010 Finnish movie RARE EXPORTS: A CHRISTMAS TALE is not your typical heartwarming holiday classic. On the contrary, it's a spooky, darkly comic, grim fairy tale rooted in ancient Scandinavian mythology-about a Santa (found frozen in a block of ice in northern Finland) who turns out to be more monster than merrymaker. (You better watch out indeed!) With similarities to GREMLINS and THE THING, RARE EXPORTS is a surefire future cult classic and, according to The Village Voice, "the best anti-Christmas Christmas movie since BAD SANTA." It also has an impressive 89% "fresh" rating on Santa Claus is comin' to town on Friday and Sunday, so print this post and present it at the box office and see RARE EXPORTS for only $6 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out) Double-screen projection times two equals wall-to-wall Warhol! Throughout his filmmaking career, Andy Warhol experimented with double-screen projection-most famously in his three-and-a-half-hour CHELSEA GIRLS (1966). On Thursday night we will show two of Warhol's dual-projector short works, OUTER AND INNER SPACE (1965) and THE VELVET UNDERGROUND (1966) . The first was Warhol's first double-screen movie, capturing Warhol superstar Edie Sedgwick in front of a TV monitor that is showing a pre-recorded videotape of her. (So two Edies x 2.) THE VELVET UNDERGROUND was a "promotional" film intended for exhibition behind the Velvets in performance. Shot on a set at Warhol's Factory, it shows Lou Reed, John Cale, and Sterling Morrison playing with whips, tying Maureen Tucker to a chair, dancing a little, and scattering food on the floor. There is sound but no music. See both movies for one price. Blow your mind: uncut ENTER THE VOID comes to Cleveland The original, uncut version of Gaspar Noé's hallucinatory new film ENTER THE VOID is 20 minutes longer than the version shown at the Cedar Lee in December. The visionary director of I STAND ALONE and IRREVERSIBLE ventures into the neon-lit club district of modern Tokyo-with its strobe lights, pulsating music, and fluorescent colors-to tell the story of a recently-deceased drug dealer who floats through space, objects, and people to watch over the stripper sister (Paz de la Huerta) he left behind. With Noé's endlessly tracking camera approximating astral projection, ENTER THE VOID is one of the greatest psychedelic head trips since Kubrick's 2001. Departs Thursday and Saturday. No one under 17 admitted!
