Filmmaker Eyad Zahra to speak after punk Muslim movie THE TAQWACORES Set in Buffalo but shot in Cleveland by ex-Clevelander Eyad Zahra, THE TAQWACORES is a groundbreaking look at America's Muslim punk scene. The movie follows a naïve Pakistani engineering student as he moves into a shabby off-campus house occupied by unorthodox Islamic twentysomethings who pray all day and party all night. They also struggle to find themselves and define their values and religion in a society that is largely suspicious of them. The film is based on a 2003 novel by Michael Muhammad Knight that coined the term "Taqwacore" ("taqwa" is an Islamic concept of piety or devotion, "core" is derived from "hardcore") and launched the "Taqwacore" music movement. Eyad Zahra will answer audience questions after Thursday's screening as part of a panel discussion on youth cultures and religious traditions organized by InterAct Cleveland. However, Zahra will not be present on Friday night, as advertised in the Cinematheque's Jan-Feb film calendar, but the film's producer or another representative from the production will take his place. Print this post and present it at the box office on Thursday or Friday and see THE TAQWACORES for only $6 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out) Visconti's magnificent historical epic THE LEOPARD returns to big, wide screen in breathtaking new digital restoration Burt Lancaster, Claudia Cardinale, and Alain Delon star in Luchino Visconti's THE LEOPARD, a sumptuous 1963 Italian historical epic set in 19th-century Sicily at the time of Garibaldi and the unification of Italy. The film tells of a prince and family patriarch whose aristocratic lifestyle is about to be swept away by the tide of history. Hailed by Martin Scorsese as "one of the greatest visual experiences in cinema," THE LEOPARD will be shown in a new, painstaking restoration that debuted at Cannes last year. Vanity Fair called it "sublime, as close as possible to watching the film's first projection." The movie, which is in color and Cinemacope, has music by the great Nino Rota and lasts 186 minutes (not 205 minutes as listed in the Cinematheque's Jan-Feb calendar). Spot it on Saturday or Sunday. THE PORTUGUESE NUN set to entrance more discerning art-film enthusiasts Eugène Green's 2009 THE PORTUGUESE NUN -- about a French actress whose life is transformed while shooting a film in Lisbon -- is a sublime, one-of-a-kind experience that blends formalism and fado. We first showed this undistributed-in-America gem in November, but since that time it has opened in London, where it garnered three five-star reviews (highest rating) in Time Out London , The Guardian , and the Financial Times , and where Sight & Sound magazine named it "film of the month." It richly deserves the attention. On Friday night we're pleased to be able to bring back THE PORTUGUESE NUN before the print returns to Europe in March. It should not be missed. Because this is a "Cinematheque Elite" presentation, tickets cost $12 ($8 for Cinematheque members and CIA students & staff). Audrey Hepburn series concludes with suspenseful WAIT UNTIL DARK In Terence Young's nerve-wracking 1967 shocker WAIT UNTIL DARK, three thugs searching for a stash of hidden heroin insinuate themselves into a Greenwich Village apartment where a blind woman (Oscar-nominated Audrey Hepburn) is living alone. Alan Arkin is chilling as the psychotic leader of the baddies. See it in a 35mm color print -- in the dark -- on Saturday or Sunday. Here's the film's original trailer. Chaplin series, SHOAH, cult classics & filmmakers Paul Schrader and Bill Plympton coming in March & April We will show 16 shorts and features written and directed by Charles Chaplin in March and April during a seven-week film series entitled "Sunnyside: The Silent Films of Charlie Chaplin." Chaplin stars in all but one of the movies that will be shown, which include comedy classics like "Sunnyside," CITY LIGHTS, and THE GOLD RUSH. All films will be shown in 35mm prints with music scores. The series runs March 5-20 and April 7-30, and will be followed in May and June by five of Chaplin's sound features. The Cinematheque's just-announced March-April film line-up also includes: -a rare theatrical showing of the epic Holocaust documentary SHOAH (in a new 35mm print) on March 12 & 13 -personal appearances by two prominent filmmakers: writer-director Paul Schrader (with his shot-in-Cleveland movie LIGHT OF DAY) on March 18 & animator Bill Plympton (with his latest feature IDIOTS AND ANGELS) on April 14. -the second Cleveland Cult Film Festival (March 25 - April 2). showcasing PSYCHO, RAGING BULL, and more Click here to download the complete March-April film calendar.
