INSPECTOR BELLAMY is Chabrol's last film, first with Gerard Depardieu INSPECTOR BELLAMY, the final film written and directed by recently-deceased French New Wave icon (and crime-film master) Claude Chabrol, is also his first with Gérard Depardieu. Depardieu plays a celebrated Paris police commissioner whose holiday with his wife is interrupted by surprise visits from his ne'er-do-well, black-sheep younger brother and from a mysterious stranger who claims that a murder has been committed. Catch this 2009 French film on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. MESRINE: KILLER INSTINCT is first half of acclaimed, two-part French crime saga Jean-François Richet's MESRINE: KILLER INSTINCT is the first half of a two-part, action-packed crime epic that The Hollywood Reporter has called "a French Bonnie and Clyde." It nabbed César Awards (France's Oscars) for Best Actor and Best Director and was nominated for eight others. THE BLACK SWAN's Vincent Cassel (heading an all-star cast that also includes Ludivine Sagnier, Gérard Depardieu, Mathieu Amalric, Olivier Gourmet, and Cécile De France) plays legendary gangster Jacques Mesrine (1936-1979), whose notorious exploits and escapes made him Public Enemy Number One in both France and Canada during the 1970s. In the first part of the saga (part two shows next weekend), Mesrine is a handsome and charismatic Algerian War vet living in 1960s Paris. A veteran mobster (Depardieu) takes him under his wing, and he quickly ascends the criminal ladder. The New York Times designated it a Critics' Pick and dubbed it "A Gallic Scarface." Thrill to Part One in a 35mm color & scope print on Friday or Saturday. Humphrey Bogart and Audrey Hepburn star in Billy Wilder's love story SABRINA Audrey Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart, and William Holden star in SABRINA, a delightful 1954 romantic comedy from the great Billy Wilder (SOME LIKE IT HOT, THE APARTMENT). It tells of a chauffeur's daughter caught between two rich brothers, one a notorious playboy, the other an aging workaholic. Swoon to it Saturday or Sunday in a glorious new 35mm film print. Beautiful and touching THE FIANCES details long-distance love affair, circa 1963 The 1963 Italian film THE FIANCÉS is an underseen gem from Ermanno Olmi, director of IL POSTO and THE TREE OF WOODEN CLOGS. In it, a young man decides to leave Milan and his fiancée to take a better, temporary job in Sicily for 18 months. He thinks separation will be good for their relationship, but soon he is lonely and pining for his betrothed. Can this engagement be saved? Nonprofessional actors enhance the authenticity, beauty, and poignancy of this simple, humanistic classic, which is being revived as part of the Cinematheque's year-long Silver Anniversary celebration. Make a date to catch it on Thursday night. Print this post and present it at the box office and see THE FIANCES for only $6 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out) Home for the holidays x 130 million: it's LAST TRAIN HOME Lixin Fan's LAST TRAIN HOME was one of three limited-release movies to win a "Golden Tomato" award from rottentomatoes.com as one of the best-reviewed movies of 2010. This Canadian/Chinese documentary has a perfect 100% "fresh" rating--unanimous favorable reviews--on the website . (The other two Golden Tomato winners are WASTE LAND, coming to the Cinematheque in early February, and MARWENCOL, coming to the art museum in late February.) LAST TRAIN HOME zeroes in on two of the more than 130 million migrant workers in China who journey home for the New Year's holiday. This is the only time all year that these urban laborers see their families in the impoverished provinces, and this annual journey constitutes the largest human migration on earth. The film's subjects, the Zhangs, are married factory workers whose children live with their grandparents hundreds of miles away. This particular homecoming proves bittersweet when the Zhangs learn that their teenage daughter wants to leave home herself and forego higher education for work in the city. All aboard Thursday or Sunday night! Cinematheque and Cleveland Council on World Affairs team up for special event The Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque and the Cleveland Council on World Affairs will present a special screening of the 2009 George Clooney/Jeff Bridges comedy THE MEN WHO STARE AT GOATS on Monday, January 31, at 7:00 pm at the Cinematheque. John B. Alexander, a retired U.S. Army colonel and intelligence expert who was one of the real-life military men who inspired Clooney's character in the movie, will appear in person to answer questions after the screening. The film, a Strangelovian military farce about the development of parapsychological techniques to be used during war, co-stars Ewan McGregor and Kevin Spacey and was based on a nonfiction book of the same title by Jon Ronson. John Alexander figures prominently in the book; he is a leading advocate for the development of non-lethal weapons. Admission to this program is $12; Cinematheque and CCWA members and CIA students & staff $8. Reservations can be made online at www.ccwa.org or by calling (216) 255-9003.
