7/31-8/2: Looney Tunes finale, The Double, Brasslands & more!
Blog . 10/7-10: Coen Bros. Storyboard Artist In Person, Fargo & More!
Coen Bros. storyboard artist J. Todd Anderson makes personal appearance on Friday, followed by screening of FARGO J. Todd Anderson is one of the film industry's top storyboard artists, having drawn the storyboards for every Coen Brothers movie starting with RAISING ARIZONA and for features directed by George Clooney, Barry Sonnenfeld, Frank Oz, Michael Almereyda, and others. With credits ranging from BARTON FINK and THE BIG LEBOWSKI to NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN and the upcoming TRUE GRIT, the talented Anderson has been one of the Coens' key collaborators since 1987. This Friday night at 7:30 pm he comes to the Cinematheque to discuss-and demonstrate-his craft in a special program entitled THE ART OF MOTION PICTURE STORYBOARDING. Anderson will draw on stage, show some of the storyboard "field manuals" he created for the Coens, and take questions from the audience. After Anderson's presentation, at 9:30 pm, we will screen, in its entirety, one of the Coen movies he worked on-the Oscar-winning FARGO (1996), a small town police comedy-drama starring Frances McDormand, William H. Macy, and Steve Buscemi. FARGO is also the only Coen Brothers movie that Anderson acts in (he plays "Victim in the Field"). Special admission (including FARGO) $12; members and CIA students & staff $8. Latecomers can see FARGO only for $9, members/CIA $6. Are kids not as smart as they used to be? See perverse DOGTOOTH and then decide A major prizewinner at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, Giorgos Lanthimos' Greek film DOGTOOTH is one of the most acclaimed, talked-about, and unforgettable films of the year! (It's also Greece's official entry for next year's Oscar for best foreign language film; good luck with that.) DOGTOOTH is a chilling black comedy about three attractive young adults-a boy and two girls-who have grown up comfortably in a walled estate, cut off from the outside world. Living with their control-freak parents who have brainwashed them with a skewed understanding of reality, these hermetic homeschoolers have their own bizarre games, rituals, and vocabulary. But growing sexual urges and the pervasiveness of America pop culture threaten to puncture their bubble. No one under 18 will be admitted to this polarizing picture, which has outraged some viewers and which Time Out New York has called "perfectly perverse...the most original nightmare in years." Catch it Thursday, Saturday, or Sunday in a 35mm color & scope print. A comedy of errors about politicians? It's not Cuyahoga County, it's LET IT RAIN LET IT RAIN is the latest dramedy from Agnès Jaoui, the accomplished French writer/director of THE TASTE OF OTHERS. In the film, which was selected for the prestigious New York Film Festival, a fortysomething French feminist writer-turned-politician (writer-director Jaoui) returns to her childhood home in Provence after the death of her mother. There she agrees to be interviewed for a documentary on successful women. The doc is being made by the son of her family's Algerian housekeeper and by a washed-up journalist (co-writer and Jaoui's real-life husband Jean-Pierre Bacrí). But it's one mishap after another in this sophisticated farce that wraps pithy social commentary in a colorful, pleasing package. Read The New York Times review and then attend the movie on Thursday, Saturday, or Sunday. Print this email and present it at the box office at see LET IT RAIN for only $6 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out) James Mason and Ava Gardner star in ravishing Technicolor fantasy PANDORA AND THE FLYING DUTCHMAN "(A) masterpiece? The supreme encounter between Surrealism and Hollywood." So says critic Jonathan Rosenbaum about PANDORA AND THE FLYING DUTCHMAN , Albert Lewin's luscious and ethereal 1951 fantasy which has been newly restored to its original Technicolor glory after years of painstaking work. James Mason plays the fabled 17th-century Dutch sailor, doomed to sail the seven seas in a ghost ship until love saves him. Ava Gardner (never-more-radiant) plays a young American who just may stop the floating of his boat. Cinematography by Jack Cardiff (THE RED SHOES). It was shown at the New York Film Festival in 2009; see it in Cleveland Saturday or Sunday. LET THE RIGHT ONE IN coming on 10/29 LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, the acclaimed 2008 Swedish vampire film and teen love story, will fill the "To Be Announced" slot on Friday, October 29, at 9:15 pm.
