7/1-3: The Warlords, A Town Called Panic & More!

06/29/10  |  Posted by Cinematheque  |  Posted in Cinematheque

Jet Li returns in action-packed Chinese epic THE WARLORDS No local theatre showed more early Jet Li movies than the Cinematheque (we even presented a "Jet Li Weekend" in 1994). So it will be a homecoming of sorts when his new historical epic THE WARLORDS receives its exclusive Cleveland theatrical premiere this Friday and Saturday. Li plays a Qing Dynasty army general who teams up with two bandits (Andy Lau, Takeshi Kaneshiro) to fight government rebels during China's 1860s Taiping Rebellion. Read the very favorable New York Times review of the movie here and then catch the action-packed spectacle this weekend. Monteiro series continues, and concludes, with ultra-rare masterpiece SILVESTRE We've added one more movie to our series "Perverse Poet: João César Monteiro," which began earlier this month. SILVESTRE is a 1982 film by this Portuguese iconoclast, and those who know it think it is one of his greatest works. Based on two medieval fables, the movie stars the luminous Maria de Medeiros (in her screen debut) as the daughter of a nobleman who must disguise herself as a knight errant in order to fight unwanted suitors. It's a glorious color film that revels in artifice: painted backdrops, front projections, and other boldly theatrical devices. Because the 35mm print we will show comes from Portugal (SILVESTRE is not distributed in the U.S.), we're charging $12, members and CIA students & staff $8. It's a "Cinematheque Elite" presentation. THE WHITE MEADOWS is the next great Iranian movie, and you can see it now Here's another "Cinematheque Elite" presentation (see previous blurb) -- a new Iranian film that premiered at the 2009 San Sebastian Film Festival (watch festival footage and film trailer here ) and has been seen in America only at the 2010 San Francisco and Tribeca Film Festivals. But the acclaim and advance buzz for this new movie from a recently-arrested (and released) Iranian filmmaker is very strong. THE WHITE MEADOWS is a mesmerizing, visually stunning fable in which a boatman collects tears from the inhabitants of the white salt islands of Iran's Lake Urmia. Don't miss it Thursday or Saturday. Special admission is $10; members and CIA students & staff $7. A TOWN CALLED PANIC is another kind of "Toy Story" The crazy, colorful Belgian stop-motion animated film A TOWN CALLED PANIC was an audience hit not only at this year's Cleveland Int'l Film Festival, but also at the Cinematheque when we showed it in late May. In fact, it did so well we're bringing it back for one more screening this Saturday night. The very funny movie follows three plastic toys-a cowboy, an Indian, and a horse-as they embark on a series of surreal, unsynopsizable adventures revolving around a mis-shipment of 50 million bricks, a journey to the center of the earth, a giant robot penguin, and much more. Print this email and present it at the box office on Saturday and see "A Town Called Panic" for only $6 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! Kids 12 & under are also only $6 (though young children might be mystified by the English subtitles). News round-up: movie added, guests added, ticket price going up, etc. There are five news items this week. (1) We've added a film to our July schedule. On Monday, July 19, at 7:30 pm the Cinematheque will present the exclusive Cleveland premiere of the new George A. Romero zombie film SURVIVAL OF THE DEAD (pictured above). Regular ticket prices will apply. (2) As of 7/1, the non-member ticket price will be $9, not $8. But since the $6 member price is staying the same, now is the time to become a Cinematheque member! (3) David Nemer, the producer of the Serbian/U.S. romantic comedy HERE AND THERE, will appear in person to answer audience questions after the 7/10 7:30 pm screening of the movie. Nemer is originally from Akron. (3) Local percussionist Mell Csicsila http://www.strikingthings.com/ will play the xylophone during "Groucho's Garden Party" on Friday, July 9 at 6:00 pm in the Institute's outdoor courtyard. The party precedes our first Marx Bros. comedy, THE COCOANUTS, showing at 7:30 pm that night. (5) A number of your responded to last week's end-of-the-fiscal-year appeal for money, and we are very grateful for your support! But if you didn't respond, there's still time. Just click on this Make a Gift link and designate your gift for the Cinematheque. Or send a check dated June 29 or 30 to the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque, 11141 East Boulevard, Cleveland, OH, 44106. Or call us at (216) 421-7450 with a VISA or MasterCard number.
