CIA again named to "Best in the Midwest" list

12/3-6/09: Raiders Adaptation, Commercials, Satyricon & More!

Amazing RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK: THE ADAPTATION returns, with two of its makers Once upon a time, during the 1980s to be exact, there were three teenagers growing up in Mississippi who loved Steven Spielberg's "Raiders of the Lost Ark" very much. These three kids -- Eric Zala, Chris Strompolos, and Jayson Lamb (pictured left to right above, and right to left below - with Steven Spielberg) -- loved "Raiders" so much that they decided to remake the film in their own basements and backyards, shooting on consumer-grade VHS videotape and employing a cast of friends and pets. Seven years later, as they were about to graduate from high school, they finally completed their film. Now known as RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK: THE ADAPTATION and shown internationally to wildly enthusiastic audiences (including filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino, Eli Roth, and Spielberg himself), this hilarious and downright amazing labor-of-love returns to the Cinematheque this Thursday and Friday. (We first showed it in 2007.) Zala and Strompolos will attend both shows and answer questions after the screenings. You can see "Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation" only when the filmmakers present it, and since Eric still lives in Mississippi and Chris in California, that doesn't happen very often. So don't miss this rare opportunity. Tickets cost $12; Cinematheque members, CIA students & staff, and kids 12 & under $8. Watch a BBC-TV story about the movie here. Or watch this original theatrical trailer that has been overlaid with scenes from the remake. At noon on Friday, December 4 in CIA's Aitken Auditorium (where the Cinematheque shows its movies), Eric and Chris will present a free lunchtime talk and PowerPoint presentation about their movie and its incredible international reception. This hour-long event is sponsored by CIA's T.I.M.E.-Digital Arts department and is free to the public. (However, gates to the CIA parking lot will be down, so those not affiliated with the school will have to park elsewhere.) Watch 2009 BRITISH TELEVISION ADVERTISING AWARDS and stop recording all those boring TV shows just to see the great commercials British television has long been regarded as superior to American television. The same may be true for British commercials (or adverts, as the Brits like to call them). See for yourself when we show almost 100 award-winning commercials in the program 2009 BRITISH TELEVISION ADVERTISING AWARDS this Thursday and Friday. The 2008 edition of this very popular and entertaining annual program drew over 20,000 viewers to the Walker Art Center last December! That's quite a testament to the show's wit, humor, invention, and technical innovation. Print this email and present it at the box office and see the new 2009 show for only $6 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out) Natives take on Big Oil in gripping CRUDE After suffering the effects of catastrophic environmental damage caused by decades of oil drilling, the Cofan Indians of Ecuador bring a class action lawsuit against petroleum giant Chevron in the riveting new documentary CRUDE by Joe Berlinger ("Brother's Keeper," "Paradise Lost"). Don't miss this unusual legal drama when we screen it Saturday and Sunday. LIVERPOOL goes to the end of the earth From "Crude" (see previous paragraph) we journey south on the South American continent to Tierra del Fuego, the southernmost tip of Argentina, for Lisandro Alonso's minimalist masterpiece LIVERPOOL , showing Saturday and Sunday. In this acclaimed film that's not distributed in the U.S., a taciturn merchant seaman takes shore leave to visit his elderly mother and his snowy, desolate hometown. On one level, not much happens in this leisurely, laconic movie; on another, a lot happens. This is a "Cinematheque Elite" presentation so tickets cost slightly more ($10; Cinematheque members and CIA students & staff $7). But you may never have another chance to see this major work by a fast-rising young Argentinean director. Watch the unsubtitled Argentine trailer . SATYRICON: Rome before Christ, after Fellini The headline above was the tagline in the ads for the original U.S. release of FELLINI SATYRICON , the Italian director's opulent 1969 take on Petronius and Ancient Rome. Words can't do justice to this truly strange and visually stunning movie, so we won't even try. Just see it Saturday or Sunday in a 35mm color and scope print. Our Fellini retrospective runs through December 13 and is sponsored by Cleveland's Fellini-inspired restaurants -- La Dolce Vita at 12112 Mayfield Road at the corner of Murray Hill in Little Italy, and La Strada at 2050 East Fourth Street downtown -- and by Campari. Don't forget to show your ticket stub at either restaurant and receive a free appetizer with the purchase of any entree. Offer good through February 28, 2010. Shop local at CIA student art show Fri-Sun You've heard of dinner and a movie. How about dinner and a present? Get some of your holiday shopping done this weekend before or after the movie at the Cleveland Institute of Art's annual student art sale, a treasure trove of unique hand-made gifts. It takes place in the Ohio Bell Auditorium (just down the hall from the student lounge) from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm on Friday; from 10 am to 8 pm on Saturday; and from 12:30 pm to 6:00 pm on Sunday. Sunday is also Holiday CircleFest in University Circle, so 12/6 "Satyricon" attendees should allow a little extra time to park.
