11/5-8: The Cove, Baader Meinhof, Fellini And More!

Award-winning THE COVE exposes secret dolphin killing off coast of Japan Though it plays like a thriller, THE COVE is a non-fiction film -- about a team of activists, divers, and cameramen who use secret cameras and high-tech surveillance equipment to document and expose the longstanding covert slaughter of dolphins in a well-guarded area off the coast of Japan. One of the most acclaimed movies of the year (95% "fresh" rating on Rottentomatoes.com), "The Cove" also won the Audience Award for best documentary at the Sundance Film Festival. The movie also just premiered in Japan, where many Japanese people were shocked by its revelations. Read about that in this recent NY Times article. The film receives its exclusive Cleveland premiere this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Oscar-nominated BAADER MEINHOF COMPLEX premieres in Cleveland One of the five movies nominated for this year's Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, THE BAADER MEINHOF COMPLEX is a gripping dramatization of the origins and career of the Red Army Faction -- aka the Baader Meinhof Gang -- that terrorized West Germany with bombings, kidnappings, and murders during the 1970s. Moritz Bleibtreu and Bruno Ganz star in this two-and-a-half-hour historical epic that reminds us that political extremism is nothing new. See it Saturday, Sunday, or next Thursday, November 12. Fellini series continues with two masterpieces from the 1950s; Lou Giannetti introduces LA STRADA on Nov. 8 Dr. Louis D. Giannetti, CWRU Professor Emeritus of English and Film and author of the best-selling college text book "Understanding Movies," introduces one of his favorite Fellini movies, LA STRADA , on Sunday afternoon. It's always a treat to hear Lou, and "La Strada" remains one of Fellini's most beloved and crowd-pleasing movies. Anthony Quinn plays a brutish, itinerant strongman who hires a love-starved, simple-minded waif (the indelible Giulietta Masina, Fellini's wife) to travel with him and assist him during his performances. It won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1956 and remains one of the essential classics of world cinema. Just as good as "La Strada," though less well-known, is Fellini's 1953 movie I VITELLONI showing Thursday and Saturday. It's a semi-autobiographical account of twentysomething slackers living in a small, provincial Italian seaside town, where they waste time drinking, womanizing, horsing around, and daydreaming about ambitions they will probably never realize. It influenced coming-of-age movies like Scorsese's "Mean Streets" and Lucas' "American Graffiti." And if you print this email and present it at the box office, you can see "I Vitelloni" for only $6 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week. (Limit two discount admissions per print-out) Our Fellini retrospective is sponsored by Cleveland's Fellini-inspired restaurants -- La Dolce Vita at 12112 Mayfield Road at the corner of Murray Hill in Little Italy, and La Strada at 2050 East Fourth Street downtown -- and by Campari. TAXIDERMIA: an art-house gross-out classic The Hungarian fairy tale TAXIDERMIA , showing Thursday and Friday, is Gyorgy Palfi's first film since his unique "Hukkle." It's a darkly funny fantasy that focuses on three generations of Hungarian men in one family and their bizarre bodily fixations -- from truly "hot" sex to speed-eating to taxidermy. According to Variety it "sets a benchmark for body horror in the cinema...The climax one-ups David Cronenberg's worst nightmare." No one under 18 will be admitted to this outrageous film that, regrettably, will be shown from Beta SP videotape and not 35mm film. The movie's American distributor informed us less than two weeks ago that they had no 35mm print of the picture; it was a "digital only" release for them. Although we looked into importing a 35mm copy from England, it proved just too costly: over $300 each way. Therefore we are video-projecting "Taxidermia" and lowering our ticket prices for it to $6, Cinematheque members and CIA students & staff $5. We apologize for any disappointment, which we share. Films This Weekend Thursday, Nov. 5, at 6:30 pm Friday, Nov. 6, at 8:30 pm TAXIDERMIA Note: movie will be projected from Beta SP videotape, not 35mm film. Admission $6, members/CIA $5. Thursday, Nov. 5, at 8:20 pm Saturday, Nov. 7, at 5:30 pm Fellini! I VITELLONI Friday, Nov. 6, at 10:20 pm Saturday, Nov. 7, at 7:25 pm Sunday, Nov. 8, at 9:20 pm THE COVE Saturday, Nov. 7, at 9:30 pm Sunday, Nov. 8, at 6:30 pm Thursday, Nov. 12, at 8:15 pm THE BAADER MEINHOF COMPLEX Sunday, Nov. 8, at 3:30 pm Fellini!
