Cinematheque To Show Nine Fellini Films

10/26/09  |  Posted by Cinematheque  |  Posted in Cinematheque

In anticipation of the 12/18 release of the film version of the Fellini-inspired musical NINE, the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque will show nine feature films by the Italian maestro himself between November 1 and December 13. The series "Nine by Fellini" contains of all of the director's most important films -- from early masterpieces like LA STRADA and THE NIGHTS OF CABIRIA to pivotal works like LA DOLCE VITA and 8½ to later phantasmagorias like FELLINI SATYRICON and FELLINI'S CASANOVA (which opens the series on November 1 and 2). All movies will be shown in beautiful 35mm film prints. Author and film historian Lou Giannetti, CWRU Professor Emeritus of English and Film, will introduce LA STRADA on November 8. Fellini (1920-1993) is one of the most famous and revered filmmakers in the history of the cinema. He began his career as a cartoonist, then as a screenwriter for Roberto Rossellinii. (He co-wrote Rossellini's neorealist masterpieces OPEN CITY and PAISAN.) In the 1950s he launched his career as a solo director with such earthy black-and-white classics as I VITELLONI, LA STRADA, and THE NIGHTS OF CABIRIA. The last two starred Fellini's wife Giulietta Masina, his muse and frequent collaborator. The 1960s began with Fellini directing two of the most revolutionary and influential movies in history: LA DOLCE VITA, an epic exposé of Italy's soulless jet set, and 8½, an autobiographical fantasy centered around the dreams and memories of a blocked film director. (8½ is the real inspiration for the musical NINE.) The movie's groundbreaking blend of fantasy and reality infused all of Fellini's subsequent works, as did its opulent and flamboyant visual style, which signified a major break with the director's neorealist origins. These elements influenced the work of many other filmmakers as well. All nine movies will show in the Aitken Auditorium of the Cleveland Institute of Art, 11141 East Boulevard in University Circle, telephone (216) 421-7450. Admission to each film is $8, Cinematheque members $6. Free parking for filmgoers is available in the Institute's adjacent lot, located off of East Boulevard. Here is the list of films to be shown. For further details, contact John Ewing or Tim Harry at (216) 421-7450.
