The Party - Cinema Trailer

06/09/09  |  Posted by Cinematheque  |  Posted in Cinematheque

There were no Jerry Lewis comedies voted among the top 100 films of all time in the recent poll conducted by France's "Cahiers du cinema" magazine. But Blake Edwards' THE PARTY tied for #76 on the list, filling the poll's slapstick quota. As you can see from the original theatrical trailer, Peter Sellers plays a bumbling Indian movie star who wreaks havoc at a fancy-schmancy Hollywood party. According to Wikipedia, the great Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray wanted to hire Sellers for his first American film. But he was so disgusted by Sellers' portrayal in "The Party" that he scrapped the idea. Now it's rumored that Sacha Baron Cohen may be starring in a remake of "The Party." But you can see the original -- in a 35mm color & scope print, with music by Henry Mancini -- this Friday or Saturday.
