CIA's iPad Curriculum Turns Two

Academics . Curriculum . Digital Canvas Initiative

Digital Canvas Initiative

In the fall of 2011, CIA launched one of the country’s first art and design curricula supported by iPads – the Digital Canvas Initiative. With a commitment to teaching essential group- and project-based courses, CIA faculty integrated iPad technology into the first year curriculum to add opportunities for problem-based learning through collaboration.

From sketch battles, to real-time classroom research, iPads support what has been considered a primarily hands-on education by eliminating barriers to group work and serving as a portable source of creative apps, tools for research, organization, communication, and collaboration.

CIA’s Digital Canvas Initiative supports:

  • creative risk taking and experimentation critical to artistic growth
  • problem-based learning using technology in which incoming freshmen are most familiar
  • research and quick information gathering for in-class projects
  • collaboration through group-based work

iPads for all CIA Freshmen

All CIA freshmen receive an iPad to keep upon graduation. iPads are fully integrated into CIA’s Foundation curriculum supporting group-based work and creative exploration essential to a robust first-year experience.
