The Liberal Arts Department at The Cleveland Institute of Art invites applications for an Assistant Professor position in the history and theory of film to the present. Research specialization is open, but we particularly welcome candidates who have a scholarly interest in the relation of film and video to contemporary art and multimedia practices, including installation and animation. A thorough knowledge of global currents and theories of film is essential, and those interested in teaching non-western film and video courses are encouraged to apply. Liberal Arts faculty are expected to teach upper-level undergraduate electives in their field of expertise, required courses in art history and/or visual culture and media arts, and contribute to the department’s Visual Culture Emphasis program. Cleveland is a film city, hosting an annual international film festival, and CIA operates the internationally acclaimed Cinematheque, which regularly screens films from all over the world. Candidates should demonstrate potential for excellence in research and teaching. Ph.D. (or close to completion) required.
All full-time ranked faculty members are expected to participate in departmental and school- wide committees, curriculum development, advising of undergraduate students, and assessment of programs.
Interested candidates must submit a cover letter of intent summarizing qualifications, a separate document with their teaching philosophy, CV, a list of 3 professional references with contact information, and a SASE for return of materials to:
