Associate Vice President for Business Affairs

The Cleveland Institute of Art seeks an Associate Vice President of Business Affairs to assist with the organization’s strategic planning and financial budgeting process. This is a new position reporting to the Chief Financial Officer. The Associate Vice President of Business Affairs will, in conjunction with the CFO, provide financial analyses, reporting, and monitoring of financial performance against the goals of the organization. He/she will be responsible for the planning, preparation, monitoring and control of the Institution’s annual operating and capital budgets, including providing financial reporting and analyses.

Key responsibilities of the Associate Vice President of Business Affairs include:

  • Preparing the Institute’s annual operating and capital budgets under the direction of the CFO.
  • Developing financial projections and forecasts based upon economic conditions and institutional assumptions and monitoring actual results against plan.
  • Working with department heads to develop annual budgets by creating standards and procedures for efficient data collection while providing guidance and training as needed.
  • Presenting oral and written reports summarizing trends, findings, and recommendations.
  • Preparing cost analyses of current or proposed initiatives.
  • Generating various reports for data collection surveys (i.e. IPEDS, HEADS, CAC, US News and World Report, etc.), and other budget and financial reporting for foundations, donors and restricted projects as required.
  • Identifying opportunities for enhanced internal controls.
  • Ensuring compliance with government and other authorities’ reporting and recordkeeping requirements.
  • Cross training, assisting and serving as backup for other financial functions in the Business Office.
  • Assisting with external audit.
  • Serving as liaison from the office of Business Affairs to the organization as a whole.
  • Performing special projects as assigned by CFO.

Candidate Qualifications and Characteristics

The selected Associate Vice President of Business Affairs will be an experienced accounting or financial professional with a minimum of ten years of experience, ideally within a public accounting firm serving the not for profit or academic sector, or alternatively working directly within an academic or not for profit organization in a financial leadership role.

Additional requirements for the Associate Vice President of Business Affairs include:

  • Expert knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and experience in reporting for not for profits and higher education.
  • Significant knowledge of fund accounting.
  • Demonstrated project management skills.
  • Experience developing and managing budgeting policies.
  • Knowledge of, or ability to quickly become proficient in, Jenzabar EX and Infomaker software.
  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance with master’s degree in accounting or finance preferred. CPA certification.

Additional qualifications and skills desired of the Associate Vice President of Business Affairs include:

  • An ability to mentor non-financial managers on financial standards.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills and planning techniques.
  • Flexibility to move between day-to-day tasks and project oriented tasks.
  • Excellent analytic and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in ERP software (Jenzabar EX preferred).
  • Proficiency in report writer software.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint or graphics programs.
  • Ability to read software user manuals and apply principles.

The selected candidate will be required to interact with academic and faculty leaders across the organization to develop budgeting competencies and nurture an environment of collaboration. As an ambassador of the Institute’s business affairs function, the Associate Vice President of Business Affairs will interact with and influence individuals at all levels within the college, including but not limited to:

  • President’s Cabinet of Institute Vice Presidents & Executive Directors
  • Faculty and Office of Academic Affairs
  • Representing CIA at appropriate professional meetings, with vendors and various associations
